Getting to Know Felicity

(Continued)

In the next chapter . . .

A few weeks went by, and suddenly it hit me that I was actually going to be staying about an hour's drive from Yonkers in June. I called Felicity on her cell phone, and she picked up.  Exclamation marks tripped through the phone lines! I asked her what she was doing right that minute.  "Preparing to do the act," she explained.  Both of us were very excited about a visit the following week.

I made the trip to Yonkers Raceway from Connecticut, traipsing through the fairgrounds until I found The World of Wonders' colorful signs.

The sideshow was in a big circus tent with Chris Christ Hall in front collecting money: $2.00 for adults, $1.00 for kids.

Also outside were a fire eater (one of the original Munchkins from the film The Wizard of Oz) and a woman with a very large snake. Inside, Matthew was eating fire in front of a spellbound audience.

I caught Felicity's eye, and we both grinned from ear to ear. I watched as Felicity did the cha cha on broken glass, climbed up the ladder made of swords on which she had posed Bridgit eight months earlier,

and conducted electricity by sitting in an electric chair.

She also stood atop Matthew while he lay on the very same bed of nails as Bridgit did in October.  She did not eat fire, like Matthew, because she was slightly injured the week before. Matthew matter of factly removed his tongue stud, attached a hook, and then lifted a bucket full of rocks weighing about 15 pounds, etc. etc.

A touching reunion is what we had inside that circus tent, all the more touching, maybe, because it was so unlikely. Felicity and Matthew look very healthy. They are definitely relating to their audience including conversations with little kids.  They said the owners of the side show are like family.  Chris Christ seemed very pleased with his newest employees.

There were two other performers, soon to be joined by a sword swallower.

During our most recent telephone conversation, I learned that the side show had just relocated. Felicity had armed herself with a bunch of film and was planning to document the show "from the set up through the take down."  I'll post her best image here when I get it.
